Big Ben

Big Ben (Westminster)
Big Ben is London's famous landmark, but the name actually refers to the bell, rather than the clock itself. The 3-1/2 ton bell is named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was the commissioner of works at the time the bell hung in 1858. The 320 foot tower housing the clock looms over the River Thames, lighting up the night sky. During World War II, members of the Big Ben Society would join in prayer as the great bell would sound just before the start of the nine o'clock news on the radio.
